Fault finding and repairs

A tripping safety switch, a dead circuit or lights that flicker for no obvious reason can be hard to pin down, especially in a house with old or undocumented wiring. These faults are often intermittent, which makes them worse to live with and harder for some electricians to find.

What the job involves

Tripping safety switches, dead circuits and flickering lights tracked down and fixed.

What's included

  • On-site testing of affected circuits
  • Tracking down intermittent faults, including those tied to weather or water ingress
  • Repair of the fault once found
  • Testing the circuit after the repair
  • Explanation of the cause and the fix

How a fault finding and repair job runs

  1. Step 1:

Call or message with what's happening: when it trips, what's affected, anything you've already tried

  2. Step 2:

We come out to test the circuits and narrow down the cause

  3. Step 3:

If something unexpected turns up once we're into it, we show you and price it before continuing

  4. Step 4:

The fault is fixed and the circuit tested

  5. Step 5:

We explain what caused it and what was done

“Half the house lost power. Dom found a burnt-out connection at the board in about twenty minutes and had us back up and running.”

Good to know before you book

Does my old fuse board need replacing?

Not always straight away, but older ceramic-fuse boards often have no safety switches. We'll look at it and tell you what we'd recommend and why.

How messy is a rewire?

Less than most people expect. In most period homes we can run cables through the roof space and under the floor, so we only cut where we have to and patch those spots.

Can you install an EV charger at my place?

Usually, yes. We check your supply, your switchboard and the cable run to where you park first, then quote the whole job.

Do you come out after hours?

For urgent faults like no power or a safety switch that won't reset, we'll come when one of us is available. After-hours rates apply and we'll tell you what they are first.

Can you replace my two-pin power points?

Yes. Old two-pin sockets have no earth, so we check the circuit and wiring behind them before fitting new earthed outlets.

Which areas do you cover?

Yarraville, Seddon, Footscray, West Footscray, Kingsville, Spotswood, Newport, Williamstown, Maidstone and Altona North.

How the job is priced

Fault finding is usually charged by the hour plus parts, and we tell you the hourly rate when you book. If the job turns out bigger once we're into it, we price that before continuing.
